Intranets have been defined in
a number of ways.
An Intranet is an internal web
based network, accessible to a select group of people or employees
of an organization.
Intranets - use of Internet technologies
within an organization (or company) to achieve better results than
the conventional means of data access and transfer. Intranet helps
in cutting costs, easy and fast accessibility of day-to-day information.
Intranets are therefore web-based
systems of storing and retrieving information by the authorized
users of that corporation or organization.
One of the reasons why web based
networks (Intranets) are becoming popular with corporate bodies
is that web servers contain both text and non-text items: recorded
speech, graphics, and even video clips can now be relayed in a closed
company network. This means that web "pages" (as they are known)
can range from the most mundane of lists, to if so desired, sophisticated
multimedia shows.
The other maybe more important
reason is that much of the corporate data is not for public consumption.
For example, a large oganizations Intranet will only be accessible
to its employees and other authorized users with the proper series
of encryption and authentication routines in place for security.
Each web server also contains information
that can be cross-linked to others, whether they are located around
the world or just down the street.
It is this ability to link, designed
correctly, that enables the web its power, and its attraction, as
a distributed corporate information resource.
